HubWatch – 20 February 2026

Your weekly glimpse into research in action at Southern Dairy Hub.

Insights

Pasture sampling: We sent a pasture quality sample away early this week and were very pleased with the crude protein at 22% DM and ME at 11.7 MJ/kg DM. We were, however, surprised by the lower dry matter result of 15%. Dry matter at 15% is considered on the lower end of the typical range (15% to 25%) and has prompted discussion within the farm management team. We look forward to further pasture sampling results from other paddocks. This highlights the value of good information for making timely decisions.

Note: Paddock 3 was planted in the 2021/22 season using full cultivation with Vast Tetraploid Perennial Ryegrass. Tested 16 Feb 2026.

Oat silage results and decisions: We received the oat silage results and found the protein content complements the protein requirements of brassica crops through winter. Using the DairyNZ FeedChecker tool, we compared options of swapping pasture baleage for oat baleage. Option 1 is 50:50 oats and pasture baleage, while option 2 is all pasture baleage using custom feed quality. The results (see table below) showed little difference in nutrient and energy supply for cows. Oat baleage will provide useful bulky fibre, supporting rumen function and helping prevent acidosis.

SDDT farmer workshops: SDDT has appreciated the strong engagement from farmers across the southern region when gathering input on future research priorities. Feedback has been collected through workshops, field day interactions, phone calls and emails. If you have further ideas, please contact andrea.dixon@southerndairyhub.co.nz to share your thoughts. Over the coming weeks, SDDT will collate responses to identify key themes.

Congratulations to Sean Dowdle, winner of the $200 New World voucher for participating in the Field Days research question. Thanks to Roddy Bridson from PGG for drawing the winner. Roddy is pictured with Andrea in this week's HubWatch.

Standard herd

  • Average BW Southland herd stocked at 3.2 cows/ha at peak, up to 180 kg N/ha and wintered on swedes.

Future herd

  • Higher genetic merit herd (127 BW difference) stocked at 2.5 cows/ha at peak, up to 180 kg N/ha and wintered on baleage.
