Insights
Pasture and feeding
Pasture growth is now well above demand, and at least three Future paddocks have been stepped over for conservation as they are above the pre-graze target of 3,100 kg DM/ha.
In-shed feeding has been reduced for the Standard herds. Although paddocks have been locked up for conservation, the Future herd will continue to receive 1 kg DM/day of DDG/Barley for mineral supplementation.
Continuing in-shed feeding also allows us to priority feed cows with a BCS of 4.0 and under. Currently, Standard priority animals receive an extra 1 kg DM/day of PKE, while Future priority animals receive an extra 1 kg DM/day of DDG/Barley. The priority lists are reviewed fortnightly.
Silage and fertiliser
The silage stack is now finished.
All paddocks have now received one application of fertiliser (SoA). We will now begin applying the next round as urea (30 kg N/ha) to paddocks that received fertiliser more than 28 days ago.
Young stock
The R2s were weighed on Monday, with an average weight of 313 kg. Scratchies were applied, and one week of spot AB mating commenced on Tuesday. On 3 November, they will receive a PG injection, followed by a further five days of AB mating before Jersey bulls are put out with them.
All calves were weighed, drenched and Lepto vaccinated on Wednesday, with an average weight of 87 kg. Of these, 80 calves were weaned (minimum weight 93 kg, average weight 108.5 kg) and will stay on farm for about a week before heading to the grazier.
Effluent
Effluent composition results received last week showed an N content of 0.147 kg/m³, a P content of 0.026 kg/m³ and a K content of 0.21 kg/m³. These levels are lower than in previous Octobers, likely reflecting dilution from September rainfall and the lower CP content of the grass due to later N fertiliser applications.
Farm System Description
Standard herd: average BW Southland herd stocked at 3.2 cows/ha at peak, up to 180 kg N/ha and wintered on swedes & kale
Future herd: higher genetic merit herd (127 BW difference) stocked at 2.5 cows/ha at peak, up to 180 kg N/ha and wintered on baleage
